What Now?

The Timberwolves traded away their final two starters from last season yesterday, and opened up a lot more playing time for all of the young guys. But, in making the trade, the Wolves actually added more names to the roster, and now have a heavy task in front of them to accomplish before next Monday.

The roster currently stands at 18 players after this recent trade, and the Wolves must get down to at least 15 players before the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday afternoon.

The number will easily be cut to 17 players when the Wolves cut John Edwards from the roster anytime now. But, after that it’s all pretty much up in the air. Kevin McHale has made several different hints towards what the team will do, including this recent comment about what will happen now that this trade has been made.

“We have some other stuff that we’re probably going to do. There’s a lot of business going on.”

If I had to guess what will happen, I’d say that one or two of these players will be bought-out or traded away. According to Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune, both Doleac and Walker are currently expected to report to the Wolves while Wayne Simien is not.

This could mean that the Wolves will buy his contract out very soon, which isn’t all that surprising. Simien’s contract for this season calls for just over $500,000 which is a small price to pay for the Wolves to cut the roster down.

Assuming Edwards and Simien are both gone, that still leaves one more move for the Wolves. It might be easy to assume that either Walker or Doleac get moved, but don’t be surprised if both go or another separate move is made as well.

  1. It’ll be disappointing if Simien is bought out rather than Antoine or Doleac, he still has a lot of potential if he can stay healthy. In all likelihood, Edwards, Simien, and Chris Richard will be the casualties on this roster; but having Antoine actually on this team doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Interesting stuff though, keep up the good work!

  2. I agree.

Out of the three guys, I’d like to keep Simien. But, if he is the only guy not reporting, it looks as if he might be the odd man out.

It’ll be a shame if Walker is still here on Opening Day.
